Liquid Biopsy: An Emerging Platform for Detecting, Monitoring, and Selecting Therapy for Cancer (C)
Session Description
This session has been identified and designated as Credit to Meet ACS Accreditation/Verification Requirements for Cancer. Learn more about ACS Accreditation/Verification Requirements.
Liquid biopsy measures tumor-derived products in blood and other easily attainable bodily fluids (such as urine, saliva, or tears). Such products include circulating tumor cells (CTCs), circulating endothelial cells, circulating nucleic acids (circulating tumor DNA, ctDNA, or microRNA), tumor-educated platelets, and extracellular vesicles (EVs, of which exosomes are a subpopulation). Liquid biopsy blood or other fluid samples may be obtained serially without entailing the risk of tissue biopsy and may better reflect the spectrum of molecular features defining a patient’s cancer that could be missed with a single core needle tissue biopsy of a heterogeneous tumor. This session will give an overview of the field and then describe areas that may specifically affect future surgical care and oncology practice.
Moderator: Stefanie S. Jeffrey, MD, FACS, Stanford, CA
Co-Moderator: Genevieve M. Boland, MD, PhD, FACS, Boston, MA
