ATLS 11 Instructor Course

 

The overall aim of the Advanced Trauma Life Support® (ATLS®) Instructor Course is to prepare new instructors to facilitate the ATLS Course. 

 

The ATLS® Instructor Course is one of the key contributors to the quality and outcomes of ATLS Courses for clinicians. The knowledge and skills acquired in the ATLS Instructor Course will not only enable you to effectively facilitate ATLS Courses but will also enhance your ability to undertake clinical teaching in the future. The principles of the ATLS Instructor Course are grounded in the best medical education evidence and are applicable across various educational settings. 

 

To qualify as an Instructor Candidate, the following are required: 

  • Come prepared for the Instructor Course having read this manual and any other assigned readings.  

  • Attend the entire Instructor Course. 

  • Participate actively in all elements of the Instructor Course. 

  • Apply contemporary adult education principles. 

  • Support fellow participants. 

  • Exhibit professionalism including being punctual and prepared for the Course.

Target Audience

Student Course participants identified as having instructor potential may advance to the Instructor Course within a specified time frame.

Learning Objectives

Upon completing the ATLS® Instructor Course, the participants will be able to: 

  • Identify the roles of the Course Director, Course Coordinator, and faculty in an ATLS Course. 

  • Describe how the ATLS Course incorporates adult education concepts. 

  • Apply key adult education concepts within the ATLS Course. 

  • Perform as an ATLS instructor, incorporating contemporary adult education principles, and facilitate learning throughout all components of the Course. 

  • Describe the importance of constructive feedback to optimize learning. 

  • Demonstrate appropriate feedback in simulated conversations. 

  • Review the principles of assessment and clarify the faculty role when assessing a learner’s performance. 

  • Discuss the principles of simulation. 

  • Recognize and utilize appropriately the different forms used in the Instructor Course.

The American College of Surgeons designates this enduring activity for a maximum of 16.00 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Of the AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ listed above, a maximum of 6.00 credits meet the requirements for Self-Assessment.

CME Credit Claiming Information

All attendees must complete the course evaluation in order to claim a CME Certificate or a Certificate of Completion. The course evaluation will appear once you take and complete this course. The following requirements will need to be completed:

Successful completion of this CME activity, which includes participation in the evaluation component, enables the learner to earn credit toward the CME of the American Board of Surgery’s Continuous Certification program.

 

Diplomates of the American Board of Surgery

By attending an ACS-accredited activity, you may choose to participate in the automatic transfer of your CME credits to the ABS via the ACCME. If you are a physician and Diplomate of the American Board of Surgery (ABS). This is a free offering.

Opt in to Automatically Send your CME Data to the ABS

The direct automatic transfer applies to all learners who have an ACS profile, are Diplomates of the ABS, and have provided their ABS ID and date of birth in the ACS MyCME Portal on the Board Certification page.

Step-by-Step Instructions to Access MyCME and Opt in to Transmit Your CME Data:

  1. Log in to your MyCME Portal
  2. Select the Board Certification tab
  3. Enter the American Board of Surgery
  4. Enter your ABS ID
  5. Enter your Day and Month of birth
  6. Next go to the Send CME Data tab
  7. Toggle to Opt In (green) “Yes! I choose to Opt-in and permit the ACS to automatically transfer all my ACS -Accredited CME data.

Once you have opted to automatically transfer your CME credits to the ABS, please allow 24 hours after transferring claiming your CME credits before you log into your ABS account to confirm the credits are in your ABS CME Repository. You may opt out at any time.
