ATLS 11 Instructor Course
The overall aim of the Advanced Trauma Life Support® (ATLS®) Instructor Course is to prepare new instructors to facilitate the ATLS Course.
The ATLS® Instructor Course is one of the key contributors to the quality and outcomes of ATLS Courses for clinicians. The knowledge and skills acquired in the ATLS Instructor Course will not only enable you to effectively facilitate ATLS Courses but will also enhance your ability to undertake clinical teaching in the future. The principles of the ATLS Instructor Course are grounded in the best medical education evidence and are applicable across various educational settings.
To qualify as an Instructor Candidate, the following are required:
Come prepared for the Instructor Course having read this manual and any other assigned readings.
Attend the entire Instructor Course.
Participate actively in all elements of the Instructor Course.
Apply contemporary adult education principles.
Support fellow participants.
Exhibit professionalism including being punctual and prepared for the Course.

Target Audience
Student Course participants identified as having instructor potential may advance to the Instructor Course within a specified time frame.
Learning Objectives
Upon completing the ATLS® Instructor Course, the participants will be able to:
Identify the roles of the Course Director, Course Coordinator, and faculty in an ATLS Course.
Describe how the ATLS Course incorporates adult education concepts.
Apply key adult education concepts within the ATLS Course.
Perform as an ATLS instructor, incorporating contemporary adult education principles, and facilitate learning throughout all components of the Course.
Describe the importance of constructive feedback to optimize learning.
Demonstrate appropriate feedback in simulated conversations.
Review the principles of assessment and clarify the faculty role when assessing a learner’s performance.
Discuss the principles of simulation.
Recognize and utilize appropriately the different forms used in the Instructor Course.
In accordance with ACCME regulations (ACCME Standard 3), the American College of Surgeons must ensure that anyone who is able to control the content of the activity has disclosed all financial relationships with any ineligible companies in the 24 months prior to their involvement in the educational activity. Financial Relationships: Financial relationships are relevant if the following three conditions are met for the individual who will control content of the education: 1) a financial relationship, in any amount, exists between the person in control of content and an ineligible company; 2) the financial relationship existed in the last 24 months; 3) the content of the education is related to the products of an ineligible company with whom the person has a financial relationship. |
