Fundamentals of Oncoplastic Breast Surgery

Fundamentals of Oncoplastic Breast Surgery, a hands-on course for surgeons who want to incorporate oncoplastic breast surgical techniques into their practice.  Surgeons will learn both basic oncoplastic techniques that they can perform and more complex techniques which require a team approach with a plastic surgeon. Participants will learn how to perform breast marking to improve scar placement and to hide scars, crescent and round block technique, tissue advancement techniques, Lucci lattice, donut mastopexy, dual planning, and simple mammoplasty.

Course Outline

The course is a hybrid course with recorded didactic lectures to be viewed prior to attendance at the hands-on skills lab.

Part 1: Online Didactic Lectures (To be reviewed prior to the hands-on lab)

Part 2: In-Person Hands-on Surgical Skills Lab - 4 hours (Skills Lab course takes place on February 18, 2025)

• Module 1 – Breast Marking
• Module 2 – Parallelogram Mastopexy and Crescent Mastopexy
• Module 3 – Donut Mastopexy (Round Block technique), Lucci Lattice and Tumor Bed Marking
• Module 4 –Mammoplasty to improve closure with minimal dead space

Learning Objectives

During the course, learners will:

  • Learn the basics of measurement and marking for cosmetic outcomes
  • Perform a parallelogram to promote flat scars
  • Perform a crescent excision around the nipple-areola complex
  • Perform a round block technique in order to reach any quadrant of the breast and multiple lesions through a single scar
  • Practice the technique of suture latticing and tumor bed marking to avoid dimpling of the excision site and improve cosmesis after radiation
  • Learn the technique of creating tissue planes to improve cosmetic outcomes
  • Improve cosmesis utilizing local tissue advancement and tissue rearrangement.
  • Promote multidisciplinary communication and care to improve cosmesis for benign as well as breast cancer patients
