Demystifying Relative Value Units (RVUs): How a Surgeon Is Valued in 2018
Understanding what makes up relative value units (RVUs) and how they translate into physician reimbursement is critical for all surgeons. The Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act (MACRA) is the first major change in Medicare physician payment in the past 25 years. Surgeons need to understand how to avoid penalties and successfully participate in MACRA. Surgeons will learn about the two participation pathways within MACRA: the Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) and Advanced Alternative Payment Models (A-APMs). Surgeons will receive information on APMs and the four components of MIPS: Quality, Improvement Activities (IA), Advancing Care Information (ACI) and Cost. This session will teach surgeons how to appropriately report in MIPS and APMs, and explain how to use ACS MIPS and A-APM resources.
