#GlobalSurgery: Cross-Disciplinary Perspectives on Harnessing the Power of Social Media
Session Description
Global estimates indicate more than 3 billion people use the Internet, meaning 42 percent of the world population. This growth begs the question whether global surgery and health care in general have realized how to harness social media’s power. Although connectivity levels, speeds, and devices vary by location, data show high access for all. Uses include improved surveillance, research, study recruitment, treatment follow-up, and increased health literacy, as well as networking, research, information access, education, and advocacy. These functionalities will be explored via speakers from various backgrounds exhibiting how social media breaks barriers, leading to increased connectivity, collaboration, and global impacts.
