Immunotherapy in the Treatment of Solid Tumors: Emerging Roles of the Surgeon (C)

This session has been identified and designated as Credit to Meet ACS Accreditation/Verification Requirements for Cancer. Learn more about ACS Accreditation/Verification Requirements.

Session Description

Immunotherapy is being increasingly used in the treatment of solid tumors. Surgeons should understand its use in the adjuvant and neoadjuvant settings. This session will discuss emerging evidence and ongoing clinical trials with immunotherapeutic agents being used in adjuvant or neoadjuvant settings in solid tumors, including mismatch repair deficient colorectal cancer (adjuvant colon and neoadjuvant rectal cancer), sarcoma (neoadjuvant in combination radiation), melanoma (neoadjuvant intralesional injection), and lung cancer. This session will focus on the role surgeons play in the study design, tissue acquisition and analysis, and endpoint assessment for identifying potential surrogates for clinical outcomes. At the conclusion of this session, participants will understand the clinical indications for immunotherapy and how surgeons contribute to and lead clinical trials that incorporate immunotherapy.
