Antibiotic Stewardship: A Professional Responsibility
Session Description
Antibiotic resistance is a leading public health threat particularly in organisms resistant to agents of last resort and present unique challenges in surgical practice. While most prescribing practices follow appropriate guidelines, research suggests that surgical antibiotic misuse in surgical conditions is common and contribute to the emergence and spread of resistant bacteria. Antibiotic stewardship programs play an important role in optimal patient care and considerable opportunities exist for surgeons to embrace these efforts. Surgeon engagement is crucial to the success of these programs and is a professional obligation. This Panel Session discusses the scope of antibiotic misuse in surgical patients and reviews practice opportunities in antibiotic stewardship using evidence-based guidelines.
