Current Options in the Management of Hemodialysis Access

Session Description

This session will review both basic and complex hemodialysis access including the initial assessment and access planning for patients not yet on dialysis, intraoperative techniques, recognition and management of the failing access, and the role of surveillance strategies. The session will also discuss the broad range of endovascular and hybrid solutions that are currently available including angioplasty with drug-coated balloons and stents, management of central venous stenosis, and the use of the Hero catheter. Selection of conduit in the setting of inadequate veins and the use of balloon-assisted maturation will be included. This session is appropriate for surgeons just beginning an access practice, as well as surgeons with significant experience. There will also be emphasis on technical nuance and intraoperative techniques.
