No Woman No Care: The Case to Incorporate Women into the Global Surgery Workforce (No CME)

Session Description

Globally there is a substantial deficit in the surgical workforce leaving an estimated 5 billion people without access to safe surgery. The workforce must double within the next 15 years to address this gap—a goal that is currently unreachable. Gender disparities in education and societal expectations often prevent/discourage women from entering the surgical workforce. Surprisingly even the U.S., United Kingdom, and Japan women make up less than 10 percent of surgeons and numbers are even lower in LMICs (low- and middle-income countries). This is in contrast to increased women’s enrollment into medical school, which even exceeds male enrollment in some countries. This panel will explore strategies to improve gender equity and thereby the pipeline for women into surgical fields. Without these changes national health goals are unattainable.
