In accordance with the ACCME Accreditation Criteria, the American College of Surgeons must ensure that anyone in a position to control the content of the educational activity (planners and speakers/authors/discussants/moderators) has disclosed all relevant financial relationships with any commercial interest (see below for definitions).

Commercial Interest

The ACCME defines a “commercial interest” as any entity producing, marketing, re-selling, or distributing health care goods or services used on or consumed by patients. Providers of clinical services directly to patients are NOT included in this definition.

Financial Relationships

Relationships in which the individual benefits by receiving a salary, royalty, intellectual property rights, consulting fee, honoraria, ownership interest (e.g., stocks, stock options or other ownership interest, excluding diversified mutual funds), or other financial benefit. Financial benefits are usually associated with roles such as employment, management position, independent contractor (including contracted research), consulting, speaking and teaching, membership on advisory committees or review panels, board membership, and other activities from which remuneration is received, or expected. ACCME considers relationships of the person involved in the CME activity to include financial relationships of a spouse or partner.

Conflict of Interest

Circumstances create a conflict of interest when an individual has an opportunity to affect CME content about products or services of a commercial interest with which he/she has a financial relationship.

The ACCME also requires that ACS manage any reported conflict and eliminate the potential for bias during the educational activity. Any conflicts noted below have been managed to our satisfaction. The disclosure information is intended to identify any commercial relationships and allow learners to form their own judgments. However, if you perceive a bias during the educational activity, please report it on the evaluation.

A board-certified medical oncologist and hematologist-oncologist at Cancer Treatment Centers of America CTCA), Philadelphia, Dr. Aithal provides patient-centered personalized cancer care as part of a multidisciplinary team of Breast Center of Advanced Oncology. She is the director and co-lead of Breast Center of Advanced Oncology at CTCA, an NAPBC-certified and QOPI-certified program. Dr. Aithal is the chief of medical oncology at CTCA Philadelphia. She serves as the physician investigator for various clinical trials sponsored by the pharmaceutical industry, National Cancer Institute, ASCO, and more, which are important treatment options for patients. Dr Aithal is the speaker and faculty at various continuing medical education programs on breast cancer topics. She is also board-certified in Internal medicine. Dr. Aithal earned a medical degree from Ambedkar Medical College (Bangalore University) in Bangalore, India. She is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Society of Clinical Oncology.

Tara Sanft, MD - Nothing to disclose
Dr. Sanft is an associate professor of medicine and the director of the Adult Survivorship Program at Yale University, Yale Cancer Center, New Haven, CT. She treats women diagnosed with breast cancer and oversees a weekly survivorship clinic that provides comprehensive consultations to adult cancer survivors regarding medical care and lifestyle recommendations. In addition, Dr. Sanft conducts a long-term breast cancer survivor clinic where she sees women who are less than 5 years from diagnosis and no longer on active treatment. She is now the principal investigator for an R01-funded study in which she oversees recruitment from her center’s oncology clinics and works with the research team to conduct the intervention. Additionally, Dr. Sanft is the site principal investigator of a study looking at resilience trajectory in patients diagnosed with breast, colon, and prostate cancer so that we may better learn who most needs help in order to thrive after cancer. As a breast oncologist, she has a busy practice and is fortunate to serve on a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention committee addressing breast cancer in young women. Dr. Sanft’s research focuses on healthy lifestyles and quality of life after cancer. She recently became a facilitator for a Relationship-Centered Communication Workshop that addresses how we develop therapeutic relationships with our patients and each other.  

Michelle Willman, NP - Nothing to disclose

Ms. Willman is a masters-prepared, nurse practitioner with more than 30 years of nursing experience. Certified in oncology and breast care, she is experienced in developing innovative, evidence-based practice strategies that promote lifelong holistic care. Ms. Willman also has a strong interest in whole-person care to prevent and manage disease.
