The Challenges of Children: Supporting Surgical Trainees during Pregnancy and Beyond
Session Description
Embarking on parenthood is a daunting task for any young person, but it is compounded further for surgical trainees by their already taxing and demanding work schedules. This panel will explore the obstacles faced by surgical trainees (both female and male) as they entered into parenthood during their surgical residencies and how surgical programs can best support their residents. Perspectives will include trainees, program directors, surgical faculty, and leadership from the American College of Surgeons to discuss guidelines for parental leave, shortcomings of the current system, new models and practices being implemented across surgical programs, and the future direction of parental leave/support in modern American surgical training programs.
