Surgeon’s Role in Manipulating the Microbiome to Improve Outcomes following Cancer Surgery (C)
This session has been identified and designated as Credit to Meet ACS Accreditation/Verification Requirements for Cancer. Learn more about ACS Accreditation/Verification Requirements.
Session Description
Cancer biology is increasingly being recognized as intimately influenced by the community structure, membership, and function of the microbiome local to the tumor environment. Practicing surgeons regularly manipulate the microbiome with the use of antiseptics, nutritional supplements, antibiotics, and bowel preparation solutions. The extent to which these empirical therapies are helpful or harmful is a subject of great controversy. The overall objective of this session is to provide the foundational science and its practical application to both surgeon-scientists and practicing clinicians with the goal of understanding and reducing complications following surgery.
