General Surgeons as the GERD Experts in the Community

Session Description

Surgeons in small communities are frequently the foregut endoscopists. More and more patients are asking to be free of their dependence on PPI (proton pump inhibitors) medications. This is an excellent opportunity to establish oneself as the gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) expert in the community. In order to provide high-quality and consistently excellent results, one must be committed to a scientific and rigorous evaluation of these patients. This panel will describe the essential components of a comprehensive GERD service line. Surgeons will describe their personal experience after years of practice in their communities. Techniques of ambulatory pH testing and high-resolution manometry and others will be discussed. Patient selection and indications for various anti-reflux procedures will be discussed.
