Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) in the Care of the Critically Ill Surgical Patient (PEDS) (No CME)

This session has been identified and designated as Credit to Meet ACS Accreditation/Verification Requirements for Pediatric Surgery.

Session Description

Use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) has been increasing in recent years. With this increase has been a commensurate, albeit low, rise in other operations performed around its use. This session is an opportunity for many surgeons to understand the scope of non-cardiac operations performed while a patient is an ECMO. More specifically, the surgeons would understand the benefits, limitations, and outcomes to performing certain operations while on ECMO, including tracheal resection, acquired tracheoesophageal fistula, resection of malignancies, pediatric operations such as diaphragm hernia repairs,
and traumatic injuries to the chest.
