AJCC Principles of Cancer Staging

The Version 9 TNM for classification was enacted on 1st January 2025, health care professionals may not be aware of the innovations introduced in it. It is important to inform our constituents of the changes so that it can be applied in their clinical practice as soon as possible.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this module, learners will be able to:

  • Define the major AJCC classification prefixes and when they are used. 
  • Distinguish among T, N, and M categories and their general meanings. 
  • Apply the rules for clinical and pathological staging classification. 
  • Differentiate yc, yp, recurrence (r), and autopsy (a) classifications. 
  • Recognize the use of additional staging descriptors such as (m), (sn), and (f). 
  • Explain key principles of AJCC prognostic stage groups, including special considerations such as pM1 and Stage 0.
