Blood Product Transfusion: The Sum of the Parts Is Greater Than the Whole - or Is It? (T)

This session has been identified and designated as Credit to Meet ACS Accreditation/Verification Requirements for Trauma. Learn more about ACS Accreditation/Verification Requirements.

Session Description

Transfusion strategies for hemorrhagic shock have changed dramatically over the past decade. Ideal transfusion ratios of packed red blood cells, fresh frozen plasma, and platelets are now appreciated based upon research from military and civilian trauma. Evolving research on transfusion based upon functional assays of clotting (viscoelastography) are guiding blood component therapy. Additional research suggests the benefit of whole blood transfusion instead of component therapy. Furthermore, the benefit of prehospital fresh frozen plasma in trauma to reduce mortality is only recently recognized. The purpose of this symposia is to highlight recent and ongoing research on transfusion medicine that is guiding clinical transfusion for hemorrhagic shock.
