MeTooSurgery: Tools for Addressing and Preventing Sexual Harassment in the Surgical Workplace

Session Description

A recent survey on sexual harassment in academic medicine has revealed that medicine is rife with sexual discrimination and harassment in all their classic forms, with more than thirty percent of female respondents saying they had experienced harassment. Sexual harassment in the workplace can have very serious consequences, not just for the harassed individual, but because of diminished organizational morale, there is the potential for impaired patient outcomes. Consequently, surgical institutions must have policies to actively prevent sexual harassment, and to address allegations of sexual harassment promptly and justly. This panel session will review what constitutes sexual harassment and present best practices in addressing harassment and investigating claims. Importantly, we will discuss evidence-based steps that institutions can take to create environments free of gender-based harassment.
