The surgical management of differentiated thyroid carcinoma remains controversial, particularly for small thyroid cancers. This Panel Session will review the current literature and guidelines and, through case scenarios, discuss: (1) indications and options for the extent of initial thyroid surgery (active surveillance, lobectomy, total thyroidectomy); (2) indications, pros and cons, for prophylactic central neck dissection; and (3) management of recurrent/ persistent cervical neck disease.
