Disciplined evaluation with history, exam, imaging, and tissue acquisition is critical to accurate diagnosis and appropriate management of asymptomatic neck masses in adults. This need is critical with human papillomavirus (HPV)-related oropharyngeal cancer, which can be present in isolated neck masses. Ill-timed open biopsy may impact treatment success. This course will highlight key aspects of neck mass evaluation focusing on epidemiology, imaging, and tissue acquisition using fine-needle aspiration (FNA) and appropriately timed open biopsy and neck dissection techniques. Focused cases will be presented applying and reinforcing the principles previously outlined. (Audience polling systems could be readily used in this format.) Upon completion, the audience should be able to formulate the differential diagnoses of asymptomatic neck masses and enact a guideline-based workup and treatment plan in adults.
