Is There Life after the Operating Room? How Surgeons Approaching Retirement Can Continue to Contribute.

Session Description

The Committee on Coaching is proposing a panel to be held at the 2019 Clinical Congress that will address opportunities for retired surgeons to contribute their experiences to an appropriate audience. There is an increasing number of surgeons who have retired from surgery, or are contemplating retirement, but still have a lot to contribute to the field. This panel discussion will describe a variety of opportunities in which these surgeons can become involved. Topics to be discussed include: factors influencing the decision to retire, financial advice or planning, coaching as it applies to exchanging relevant experiences, and simulation-based techniques for teaching opportunities. The discussion will address the transfer of the wealth of knowledge of senior surgeons to an appropriate younger group.
