CC2018: Genomics for Surgeons: A Review with Applications to Breast, Lung, Gastrointestinal and Pediatric Cancers (C)

This session has been identified and designated as Credit to Meet ACS Accreditation/Verification Requirements for Cancer.

Session Description

Advances in genomics have led to practice-changing activity for surgeons and their patients, and impressive results in the treatment of cancers that previously had dismal prognoses. A fundamental understanding of the science is useful for practicing surgeons. This knowledge equips a physician to explain the utility of the testing and the implications for treatment. The session will begin with an overview of genomics, molecular pathology, whole genome and whole exosome sequencing, ctDNA (circulating tumor DNA) analysis, and other gene-based assays.
