ACS Multimedia Atlas of Surgery: Pancreas Surgery Volume

The American College of Surgeons Division of Education and Ciné-Med, Inc. have developed the interactive ACS Multimedia Atlas of Surgery: Pancreas Surgery Volume.

A comprehensive atlas style text, this volume includes 36 chapters presenting both open and laparoscopic surgical techniques for treating pancreatic disease states. Expert surgeons provide detailed, step-by-step instruction using a combination of video, illustration, and intraoperative photos to clarify specific points of each procedure.

The text opens with an illustrated review of the pancreas anatomy with an outline of surgical approaches, exposure, and mobilization. Most of the chapters include discussion on diagnostic procedures, patient selection and evaluation, patient positioning, and port placement in addition to the detailed outline of the procedure.

Foreword

In an era in which electronic and multimedia delivery of information have become the standard in news and entertainment, it is apparent that education in general has been slow to adapt. Multimedia resources have become part of our daily routine at work and at home, and it is the role of medical educators to respond to the needs and demands of this new era. Educational tools have to become more practical, easily accessible, interactive and more specific to the needs of the learner. The delivery of educational content should move towards a more enjoyable and efficient process while maintaining quality and depth. The ACS Multimedia Atlas of Surgery was created to meet that need and the Pancreas Surgery Volume continues with that goal in mind.

As with the other ACS Multimedia Atlas of Surgery volumes, the authors of the chapters within this Pancreas Surgery Volume are not only leaders in their field but are, in several instances, the surgeons who developed or mastered the technique featured in their chapter. We are fortunate to count these surgical elite as contributors to this volume. We are also thankful for the significant amount of work and effort they have dedicated to this project.

This volume covers a broad spectrum of pancreatic surgical procedures, including both open and minimally-invasive techniques. Because of the variety of ways to approach the most complex procedures, a single procedure may be showcased in several chapters, highlighting alternative techniques. It is the intent that the reader will benefit from the tips and tricks of different experts in the field.

A project like this requires tremendous efforts from many individuals behind the scenes who deserve our considerable thanks and gratitude. We would like to extend to them our profound gratitude for their outstanding leadership, commitment, and willingness to share their expertise with others. The Editors are also grateful for the extensive support from Dr. Ajit K. Sachdeva, Director of the Division of Education of the American College of Surgeons.

A venture like this cannot be completed without the understanding and continual support of our families - support that is not new to this project, but has been present throughout our professional endeavors. Dr. Asbun would like to thank his wife, Ljubica, and his sons, Domenech and Derek, for their encouragement and enthusiasm on his professional adventures. Dr. Fuchshuber would like to thank his wife, Dr. Ann Chung, for her continued support and advice during the creation of this atlas.

It has been an honor and pleasure to be part of a project whose goal is to deliver high quality surgical education in an innovative, efficient and enjoyable manner.
